Egypt has launched locally developed artificial intelligence applications, led by Karnak Chat and the English-learning app Loghat, to support the country's "digital sovereignty," Communications Minister Raafat Hindi said on Wednesday.
Hindi said the applications are part of wider efforts to develop Egyptian technologies that can process Arabic and the Egyptian dialect, protect national data, and expand the use of AI across public services.
The minister made the remarks during a meeting with an Egyptian Businessmen's Association delegation headed by the association's Vice-Chairman Fathallah Fawzi. The talks covered investment opportunities in outsourcing, digital transformation projects, and cooperation between the ministry and the business community.
Hindi said the Egyptian applications include Karnak Chat, an AI-powered conversational assistant, and Loghat, which helps users learn English.
They also include BelMasry, a system that converts text into speech and speech into text while supporting Arabic, Egyptian colloquial Arabic, and 50 foreign languages. The ministry launched the free BelMasry AI platform in August through its Applied Innovation Centre.
The new applications come as AI awareness among Egyptians rose to 65 percent in 2026 from 22 percent in 2023, according to a recent Cabinet Information and Decision Support Centre survey.
